July & August Wrap Up

Hi everyone! It’s time for another monthly wrap up. This one is a bit different since I decided to combine the months of July and August into one wrap up. These past two months I’ve sort of been in a reading slump so I’ve barely finished any books. In July I completed 4 books and a total of 2,368 pages. In August I finished 2 books and a total of 1,207 pages. (Page counts include the books I DNF’d.)

Books Read in July

I guess that July was the month of rereads for me! Three out of the four books I read in July were rereads (The Darkest Magic was the only first time read). I started off the month by finishing up my reread of A Book of Spirits and Thieves. I began it in June in preparation for the release of the series’ sequel but didn’t quite finish it before June ended. After finishing that book, I moved onto the sequel. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the first book but I still liked it!

After DNFing the next book I picked up (see below), I decided to return to an old favorite (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) because I could feel a reading slump coming on. Unfortunately, Harry Potter didn’t stop the reading slump. For the next week, I read absolutely nothing. It wasn’t until I went on vacation to the beach that I picked up an old favorite – Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen. I was so glad that I enjoyed this book just as much as I did the first time I read it! It was a great book to read while on vacation. After reading it, however, my reading slump continued. I ended up DNFing the next two books I picked up (again, see below) and didn’t finish any other books in the month of July.

Books Read in August

Unfortunately, my reading slump continued into August. I was only able to finish 2 books this month. However, I really enjoyed both books that I did read! The first one, The Sword of Summer, had been on my TBR for a very long time so I decided to pick it up. It was one of the few Rick Riordan books I hadn’t read. I really liked The Sword of Summer! It was really cool learning about Norse mythology! The second book I read, Blood for Blood, was the conclusion to a duology that I started in June. Overall, this was a fantastic duology that I recommend to fans of historical fiction and fantasy! After finishing Blood for Blood, I started reading Heartless by Marissa Meyer. Unfortunately, I ended up DNFing it (see below).

Book I DNF’d in August

  • Heartless by Marissa Meyer – DNF at 52%

This book was one of my most anticipated books of 2016 but unfortunately, I ended up DNFing it. I was never that into Alice in Wonderland so I guess it’s my own fault for expecting to like a book based on that story! I just knew I had to read it because Marissa Meyer wrote one of my favorite series, The Lunar Chronicles, and I really wanted to read another one of her books. In the end, I was more interested in the descriptions of food than in the characters and the plot so I had to DNF. This is in no way a bad book – it just wasn’t for me!
